A Hair-y Situation

Hair apparent How many hairs do you have on your head? The number varies by hair color. Blondes have an estimated 150,000, while brunettes average 110,000. If you have black hair you’ve got about 100,000, while redheads average a mere 90,000. — healthline.com

You read it first in this week’s The Factory in Guide magazine.

What color hair do you have? That will help you to know approximately how many hairs you have on your head. Hair is made up of dead cells and is very helpful to the body. For one thing, it can help keep us warm. Longer hair certainly helps keep our heads, ears, and necks warmer when the weather is cool or the wind is blowing. In the winter, men can grow their facial hair and their beards help keep their faces warm when they are outside.

Second, hair covers most of our body helping us to feel when something may be crawling on us, or helping us to know when we are wet or dry. Third, hair also helps keep moisture in. For people and animals who live in the desert areas where it is very dry, the hair in the nose helps keep much needed moisture in. Finally, hair definitely makes our heads look much better!

The Seven Sutherland Sisters and Father

There are different kinds of hair cells on our bodies. Did you know that we have very special hair in our ears to help us hear? If noises are too loud and over a certain decibel limit (the decibel is how we measure if there is too much or too little noise), the cells on our ear hair can be damaged, making it hard for us to hear very well. For instance, anything over 85 decibels for an extended period of time can cause damage to our hearing.

Also, hair can be very helpful to scientists, like forensic scientists for instance. Our hair may be made up of dead cells but it also holds our DNA.  Scientists and physicians trying to identify a person who has died, how long ago they died, or what they may have died from, can gain a lot of clues from our hair.

Who knew hair was so important?! So no matter your hair color, a very loving Creator took the time and care to make us with hair, because He knew how important it would be. God created our hair in all sorts of colors and styles. And because He loves us so much, He even knows the number of the hairs on our head! Matthew 10:30 says, “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”
